Used in the manufacture of polyurethane foam, rubber, insulating varnish, and adhesives. Toluene diisocyanate solidifies with water, emitting no toxic volatilization. Two reactions occur in polyurethane production: 1) Toluene diisocyanate reacts with hydroxyl groups to form urethane bonds, hence the name polyurethane. 2) Toluene diisocyanate reacts with water to form urea, which also produces carbon dioxide, which acts as a foaming agent. Water can be used as a blowing agent.
