Gelatin Vacant Capsules are two-piece hard shells made up of a cap and body. Size 00 is intended for manufacturers requiring a larger hard-capsule format for powders and granules. Sizes 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 are also available for products with lower fill weights or smaller formats.

The 12.5–17.5% moisture range is a key control point for capsule shells. Keeping moisture within these limits helps preserve the balance of elasticity and rigidity needed for separation, filling and locking. If the moisture level falls outside the range, shells may become brittle or harder to handle, making it important for buyers to align packaging and storage conditions with their production environment.

This grade breaks down within 10 minutes and is assessed for tightness, bursting strength, and viscosity. The permitted residue on ignition depends on the shell’s appearance: ≤2.0% for transparent capsules, ≤3.0% for translucent ones, and ≤5.0% for opaque capsules. Colour and opacity are therefore technical specifications, not merely visual choices.
